Repair of damaged DNA

UV rays can damage the DNA of skin cells, despite the use of sunscreen. DNA is essentially a manual for skin cells, telling them what to do and when to do it. When DNA is damaged by the sun’s (UV) rays, the DNA then passes on the wrong instructions to the cells in the skin, and the cells then lose their function. Ultraviolet light results in the formation of pyrimidine dimers, which cause the DNA helix to deform. These dimers interfere with the functioning of skin cells, and thus serious damage in the form of cell mutations and premature cell death can occur.

The DNA repair enzymes in ADVANCED DAY ULTIMATE PROTECT discover the faulty spot in the DNA caused by UV radiation and repair it. The enzymes are able to find pyrimidine dimers in individual strands of the DNA helix, where they cut them out, allowing the DNA to subsequently repair itself. Although DNA repair enzymes are naturally occurring in human skin, as we age their quantity decreases.

ADVANCED DAY ULTIMATE PROTECT contains photolyase, a DNA repair enzyme derived from plankton extract. Photolyase is activated by light, which accelerates DNA repair. In ADVANCED DAY ULTIMATE PROTECT cream, photolyase is encapsulated, allowing it to penetrate the skin.

Protection against pollution

As far as pollution is concerned, ADVANCED DAY ULTIMATE PROTECT contains Marrubium vulgare extract. It protects the skin from the penetration of contaminants, neutralises free radicals, strengthens the protective barrier and stimulates the repair of cell metabolism.

Protection against glycation and infrared radiation

Infrared radiation accounts for up to 49% of the sun’s rays and is associated with an increase in matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes, in addition to promoting the formation of free radicals. However, carnosine is able to inhibit the production of matrix metalloproteinases that result in collagen degradation after exposure to infrared radiation. Carnosine is also effective in protecting the skin from glycation. Glycation occurs when sugar molecules react with proteins to form advanced glycation products (A.G.E.). These then damage the collagen and elastin in the skin where wrinkles and fine lines begin to form. However, the dipeptide carnosine inhibits the formation of advanced glycation products in the skin, thus protecting the skin from premature ageing.
